Air freight explained
Air freight is one of the fastest and most efficient modes of transport for cargo. Goods are stored on an aircraft and flown to the country of their destination, usually within a few days. If you’re considering using air freight services, here are the key things you need to know.
Air cargo logistics
Shipping by air means goods must be professionally packed according to regulations defined by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). Shipping can be arranged on either a passenger aircraft (PAX) or a freighter (CAO), with each having its own set of guidelines. Cargo must be packed to the correct dimensions and the correct documentation must be supplied in order for goods to be accepted.
In the case of dangerous goods, such as gases, flammable liquids, infectious substances and corrosives, strict protocols must be followed. The regulations are outlined in IATA’s Dangerous Goods Regulations manual.
Security and customs
To ensure the full security of your consignment, it will be subjected to an x-ray scan before being loaded onto the aircraft. Upon landing, it will be scanned again with further security checks carried out.
In order to clear customs, the shipment must be cleared by security and accompanied by the relevant documentation. Any taxes or duty owed must also be paid. Air freight customs clearance requires the following documents:
- Proof of identity
- Commercial invoice
- Packing list
- Insurance documents
- Certificate of Origin
- Other relevant documents such as EUR 1 Certificate for transport within the EU
In order to expedite the customs process, it’s vital to have the correct documentation prepared. If your delivery is time-sensitive, it’s advisable to use a time-critical logistics specialist for your transport needs, as these companies can ensure a smooth and seamless customs process that avoids unnecessary delays. Suppliers, such as Priority Freight, are Authorised Economic Operators (AEO). This means the customs clearance process is simplified due to having this on their premises. Most have to attend the inland border facility.
Air freight rates
The cost of different international cargo services varies greatly, with air freight being the most expensive due to the rapidity with which goods can be transported. Charges are based on weight, with costs typically charged per kilogram. Seasonality and demand affect rates, so be sure to get quotations before committing to a particular company.
If you’re using air charter services, you’re looking at much higher costs. This is because, unlike using a scheduled commercial or passenger flight, you need to access a private plane or helicopter to transport items when delays simply aren’t an option.
Again, choosing a logistics specialist to handle your transport needs can prove beneficial, as they have the ability to negotiate the best rates for your timescale. Because air freight is charged on the weight of the cargo, the higher the weight, the lower the cost-per-kilogram charge. Freight forwarders are often able to consolidate shipments, resulting in better prices for their clients.
When choosing air freight as a transport method, it pays to work with a freight forwarder such as Priority Freight in order to get the best rates and smooth transport from origin to destination. Offering transport via commercial and passenger aircraft as well as by air charter services, we can get your goods to their destination on time, no matter how complex the demand.
