Our world, our priority
An award-winning commitment to the environment
World Environment Day, which takes place every 5th June, is the biggest annual event for positive environmental action, when millions of people all over the planet ‘connect with nature’, in a bid to protect our Earth.
At Priority Freight, we take our responsibility towards our planet seriously. There are inevitable environmental impacts associated with our daily operations but we work hard to find ways of making that impact a net positive, whilst still providing our customers with the time-critical logistics solutions they need.
Finding the most efficient ways to serve our customers
Our business exists to provide the fastest, most cost-effective and reliable logistics solutions. To do this, we use a transportation management system (TMS) that has been designed and built in-house, specifically to meet our needs. We use the TMS to optimise every shipment – not only to effectively plan the fastest or shortest route, but also to minimise empty mileage where we can, by co-loading multiple loads into the one vehicle, or utilising a van’s return journey by ensuring it is full on both legs of the journey. We always try, where time allows, to send our shipments by road rather than air to reduce both cost to our clients and to the environment.
Benefits to our customers
By optimising our shipments, we are able to save CO2 emissions. It’s not just our planet which benefits from a supply chain that minimises environmental impacts. Innovation in our performance benefits our clients too, as we can offer more cost-effective solutions, as well reacting quickly and efficiently to their orders and support them to improve their own practices.
Adopting sustainable business practices has achieved significant cost reductions, which we reinvest to increase our operational capacity and buying power, enabling us to make better decisions. And these cost savings are also shared with our clients as part of the service we offer.
By employing an ISO 14001 (Environmental) certified supplier like Priority Freight, our clients are able to promote their own sustainable business practices which, of course, is noticeable to their own customers who prefer to choose an environmentally-friendly product.
Benefits to our local community
Priority Freight owns and runs a 100-berth secure truck park near to the Port of Dover. Dover Truck Park directly benefits our local community’s environment by ensuring road safety, preserving local amenities and reducing crime – as well as helping to address HGV driver working conditions. The truck park also performs a vital service supporting important national and international road freight operations, which contribute to the UK economy and its growth.
Using less benefits everyone
Our commitment to the environment is an integral part of our company culture, and we’re proud that our people have embraced our ethos to reduce, reuse and recycle, helping us to win the Financial Industry Times’ Environmental award, as well as a Quality Excellence award.
We also do everything we can to reduce our carbon footprint internally. Our environmental management team and green champions support everyone in the business to comply with our environmental policy and objectives – creating less waste, using fewer valuable resources and reducing our carbon footprint across all our offices.
At our head office alone we’ve sent zero waste to landfill since August 2015 and, despite a 34% increase in staff numbers, we’ve managed to increase recycling by 3% and reduce our water consumption by 17%. Investment in our online systems and digital marketing has reduced postage by a massive 43%, and our Dover restaurant has increased recycling of waste cooking oil by 28%.
All our people are encouraged to come up with new ideas for making changes that benefit the environment and save money – and we reward successful initiatives with Amazon vouchers.
This World Environment Day, we’ll be celebrating the progress we’ve already made towards combining excellence in customer service with care for our planet.
