Celebrating International Women’s Day

8th March 2016

International Women’s Day falls on the 8th of March every year.

It is a global event aimed at inspiring women and celebrating their achievements. Its roots are in movements campaigning for better pay and voting rights. The event is now largely aimed at inspiring women across the world and celebrating their achievements.

Originally called International Working Women’s Day, the celebration marks the appreciation and achievement of women worldwide. The 2016 theme for World Women’s day is Pledge for Parity.

At Priority Freight, we looked at our own diverse workforce when we celebrated Women in Logistics in the Summer. Despite the transport and logistics sector traditionally being a male-dominated environment, our workforce continues to be 40% female.

Things to know about International Women’s Day:

  • The first National Women’s Day was marked on 28 February 1909 in the United States after a declaration by the Socialist Party of America
  • During an International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen the following year, Clara Zetkin, leader of the ‘Women’s Office’ for the Social Democratic Party in Germany, suggested the idea of an International Women’s Day – she proposed that every year in every country there should be a celebration on the same day and the idea was met with unanimous approval
  • 1911 saw IWD honoured for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on March 19 – Over a million people attended rallies campaigning for women’s rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination
  • On the eve of World War I campaigning for peace, Russian women observed their first International Women’s Day on the last Sunday in February 1913
  • In 1965, it was declared as a non-working day in the USSR
  • International Women’s Day was transferred to 8th March that same year and has remained the global date for the event ever since
  • In 1975, the United Nations gave official sanction to International Women’s Day and began sponsoring it
  • The United States now designates the whole month of March as ‘Women’s History Month’
  • IWD is also an official holiday in 15 countries including China, Ukraine and Vietnam
  • Over the past few years Google have marked the occasion with a ‘Google Doodle’, changing their logo on the search engine’s homepage to reflect the occasion
  • Sky News are marking today’s 100th International Women’s Day with an all-female line-up

Rachel joined us as Assistant Operations Manager in November 2015 to support the leadership of the Operations team:

Meet Rachel...

The Operations team here in Dover, as well as in Coventry, Germany and Poland are all about reacting to emergency situations, moving goods around quickly yet efficiently. In my view, our biggest selling point is our customer communications – how we keep clients up to date so they are confident all is as it needs to be in emergency situations. We’re customer-focused but we also spend time communicating with carriers, working with people across Europe to get the job done. It’s very important to build relationships with everyone involved in the supply chain.

I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the team and observing how everyone works so closely together. They’ve really got to work as a network, supporting each other in difficult situations. They pull together really well to find the right solutions, challenging though it may be, and that’s what the team is all about. It gives us all great satisfaction knowing that we did a job well and accomplished the client’s tight deadlines.

I joined in November 2015, after 11 years at Tesco where I worked in Head Office. I wanted a change of career and looked for a job with all the components that I enjoy, rather than focusing on a particular industry. The role was everything that I was looking for and there is so much potential that I can really grow with the business. I’ve only been here since November and so much has happened already!
