Celebrating Europe Day at Priority Freight

9th mayo 2017

Europe Day is a celebration of peace and unity in Europe, observed on 9th May, the anniversary of the 1950 ‘Schuman Declaration’. Robert Schuman, the French foreign minister at the time, set out his vision for political cooperation which bonded Europe’s nations – then still in the early stages of rebuilding after World War II.

This vision is considered to be the beginning of what, today, is known as the European Union. EU member states, and candidate countries celebrate it in many different ways, including throwing open the doors to European Parliament buildings and organising lectures, debates and family events.

In 2017, with the future of the EU uncertain and many countries affected by recent atrocities, it’s never been a better time to reflect on just how important unity is – between nations, cultures and – on a day-to-day level – between colleagues.

It’s when people know each other – through living, working and playing together, through travel, through participating in and learning about other people’s lives – that our differences become smaller, and we recognise more and more how we’re all the same.

When we think about unity, we think about our multilingual, multicultural teams, who operate 24/7, 365, handling consignments both domestically and around the globe from our strategically placed European offices. Each team includes specialist freight forwarders and logistics experts, and we’re proud to have such a diverse workforce, whose variety of talents, ideas and experience never fails to surprise and delight. Not only that, but we firmly believe that it’s the rich diversity of the teams that enables us to provide a service that surpasses that of many of our competitors.

Matteo’s story

Matteo joined the Priority Freight team in 2014, first working at our Dover office, but relocating to the Madrid office in 2016, to further his career.

“Using other languages at work is exciting,” he says, “and keeps me focused. I enjoy learning other languages. It helps me to be more open-minded, and knowing the language of a different country makes you perceive better its culture and lifestyle. And, of course, it helps to be able to talk to the drivers, load points and delivery points.”

Matteo was delighted to be able to transfer his experience from the UK to Spain, taking a method that has worked elsewhere and adapting it to work in different circumstances.

At Priority Freight, we recognise our own obligation to act as a good corporate citizen (not just in Europe, but around the world), towards our people, investors, customers, suppliers, and all their communities. The trust and confidence of the people we deal with rest upon our reputation, making it one of our most valuable assets. In order to maintain this respect, we demand and support the highest ethical standards when carrying out our business activities.

On 9th May, here at Priority Freight it will be business as usual as far as working together is concerned, but we’ll be celebrating Europe Day by having colleagues bring in a dish from their own country to share at lunch time.
